Pure substances Flashcards
What is a pure substance?
A pure substance consists of one substance only (element or compound)
What is purity?
Purity describes how much of a substance is in a mixture
What happens to the temperature of a pure substance when it freezes or melts?
The temperature doesn’t change when it melts or freezes
What is the proccess to remove salt from water called?
Desalination
What is chromatography?
It’s a method used to seperate and identify the substances in a mixture
When does chromatography work?
It only works if the substances in a mixture dissolve in one solvent
What are three uses for chromatography?
- To produce vaccines
- To test for explosives in an airport
- To identify food nutrients
What is concentration?
Concentration is a measure of the number of solute particles needed until it can’t dissolve fully.
Why do firefighters use water on an acid spill instead of a base?
Water will dilute the acid while a base would react strongly with the acid potentially being dangerous.
What is a hazard?
A hazard is a possible source of danger or damage
What does chlorine in water do?
Chlorine destroys bacteria, viruses and parasites in the water.
What are the possible risks of chlorine in water?
It may cause cancer
What is a saturated solution?
A saturated solution is a solution that contains the max mass of a solute that will dissolve
What is the maximum mass of a substance called?
It’s called solubility
What temperature does a substance dissolve better in?
It dissolves better in heat.
