Inside atoms Flashcards
What are the 4 parts of an atom?
Nucleus, proton, electron and nucleus
What parts of an atom does the nucleus contain?
It contains protons and neutrons
What part of an atom surround the nucleus?
Electrons
What relative charge and mass do protons have?
+1and 1 respectively
What relative charge and mass do neutrons have?
0 and 1 respectively
What relative charge and mass do electrons have
-1and 1/2000 respectively
Why do atoms have no net electric charge?
It’s because the positively charged protons will always equal the negatively charged electrons
What was the plum pudding model?
It was a model where a positive sphere had negative electrons in it
Who created the plum pudding model?
John Thomson
What is a nucleon number?
It’s the total amount of protons and neutrons in the nucleus
What particle gives sub-atomic particles their mass?
Higgs Boson particles
How are the elements in the periodic table arranged?
They’re arranged by proton number
What are isotopes?
Isotopes are atoms of the same element that have different numbers of neutrons
