Comma
(,) - used to show a separation of ideas or elements within the structure of a sentence
Semicolon
(;) - to link two independent clauses to connect closely related ideas
- to link lists where the items contain commas
Colon
(:) - to introduce a list
- to introduce direct speech
- to separate two parts of a sentence when the second part expands on the first part
- in dialogues and plays
Dash
(-) - used to add emphasis or to indicate a change in thought
- used to indicate additional information
Hyphen
(-) - to join two words into a single compound adjective/term
- used with all compound number words and fractions
Parentheses
( ) - to give addition information to add clarity or context to a sentence
Apostrophe
(‘) - used to indicate the omission of a letter or letters from a words
- used to indicate possession
Quotation marks/ inverted commas
(“ “) - used to show direct speech
- used to mark the beginning and end of a passage attributed to another and repeated word for word.
Ellipsis
(…) - communicate a hesitation
- indicate a pause for thoughts wondering off
- indicate the omission of a word, phrase, line or paragraph
