What is a metaphor?

A metaphor compares one object to another without the use of the words ‘like’ or ‘as’.
It is a direct comparison.
What are similes?

Similes help us understand one thing by comparing it with another.
A simile will use the words ‘like’ or ‘as’ and may even use ‘than’.
What is personification?

Personification is giving human qualities or characteristics to animals or objects.
What is a hyperbole?

A hyperbole is an exaggeration or overstatement intended to produce an effect without being taken literally.
What is a pun?

A pun is a funny saying that uses words that sound similar.
It is good to find humor in exploiting the different possible meanings of a word or the fact that there are words that sound alike but have different meanings.
What is irony?

Irony is when something is said and something else that is different is meant.
The opposite of what should happen, happens, in irony.
What is an extended metaphor?
(figurative language)
Extended metaphor refers to a comparison between two unlike things that continues throughout a series of sentences in a paragraph,or lines in a poem.
It is often comprised of more than one sentence, and sometimes consists of a full paragraph.
What is onomatopoeia?

Onomatopoeia are words that sound like what they mean.
What is alliteration?

Alliteration is the repetition of usually short initial sounds in two or more consecutive words or syllables.
What is assonance?
(sound device)
Assonance is the use of closely connected words in which the same vowel sound is repeated. Usually found in the middle of words.
