Pumps, Bearings, and Turbines Flashcards
- What reduces wear and can absorb and dissipate heat as well as guide and aid moving parts
Bearings
- How many different types of loads are there, and what are they called?
Radial, thrust or axial, and combination load (occurs when two types are used together).
- What are the two types a principle bearings called?
Plain Bearing (The common bearing used on turbine generators) and rolling element
- What function does a cage serve in a bearing?
Helps to keep steel balls in position, aligned correctly, and maintains separation at a fixed distance from one another.
- What formula defines bearing speed limitation?
dN = The function of shaft diameter (in millimeters), multiplied by the rotation per minute (RPM)…conversion to MM must occur before applying the formula.
- How does a bearing housing support the bearing?
It protects from environmental corrosion, and helps provide accurate shaft alignment, and support for radial and thrust loads. (two types: Pillow block or pedestal and flanged housings)
- In order to extend the life of a bearing?
One must understand the intended application of the bearing to include the load and the speed that will be imposed on it during its operation.
- The external mechanical resistance against which a machine operates against is known as?
Load
- How much new bearings be kept?
New bearings should be kept in original package until they are about to be installed
- Small, new bearings taken from sealed, undamaged packaging need not be cleaned but?
They may be wiped with a solvent, dried, then lightly lubricated just prior to installation.
- What are types of fittings for bearings?
Press fittings or shrink fittings
This fit is usually sufficient to ensure no movement between shaft and bearing?
Press Fitting
- What are the two ways a bearing can be heated for installing?
Induction heater or buy electric oven.
- What is a maximum heat that a bearing can be exposed to?
Do not heat above 250 degrees because this may affect bearing hardness.
- The entire assembly that carries the thrust bearings?
Is submerged in a bath of oil.
