DOT 1 (14 Jun 21) Flashcards
1.) What is energy?
Capacity to do work.
2.) What is Velocity?
The rate a mass travels in a particular direction.
3.) What is a mixture?
Molecules that do not mix together in a substance.
4.) What is gravity:
Acts in accordance with the laws of freely falling Body.
5.) What is water hammer?
Force or shock of a confined fluid
6.) What is friction?
A force that resists the relative motion or tendency of such motion of two bodies or substances in contact with one another.
7.) What is turbulence?
The loss of head at the entrance of a pipe.
8.) What is vacuum?
A closed space at which all air has been removed.
9.) What is a compound?
Are unlike atoms that are bonded together chemically.
10.) Define viscosity?
Resistance to flow.
11.) What is pressure?
The force exerted by a substance on a unit of area.
12.) Define power?
The rate at which work is done.
13.) Define work?
The overcoming of resistance.
14.) What is acceleration?
The rate at which velocity in a mass increases with time.
15.) Define flow rate?
The quantity of substance that moves past a point in a given time.
16.) What are the six simple machines?
a. ) The lever
b. ) Incline plane
c. ) The wedge
d. ) The screw
e. ) The wheel and axle
f. ) The pulley.
17.) What is a molecule?
The smallest division which can be made in a substance and still retain all the properties of the substance.
18.) What is a compound?
When unlike atoms are bound together chemically.
19.) What is an element?
Composed of like atoms that are chemically bonded.
20.) State of matter?
Is determined by two things: temperature and pressure.
21.) As molecules of solids increase?
As they are heated, the activity or molecular speed is increased.
22.) What is absolute zero?
The temperature at which molecular motion ceases, no lower temperature exists (-460°F).
23.) Density?
Total weight divided by volume, one cubic foot of water equals 62.5 pounds.
24.) Buoyancy?
Power of matter to be floated by a fluid substance.
25.) Specific gravity?
Weight in air divided by weight in air minus weight in water.
26.) Gauge pressure?
Referred to as relative or a gauge pressure because it does not take into account the pressure exerted by the atmosphere.
27.) Absolute pressure?
Weight of the atmosphere is added to gauge pressure resulting in absolute pressure.
28.) vacuum?
Is a closed space from which all air or gases have been removed.
29.) Viscosity?
The characteristics of a liquid that denotes the opposition to change in liquid flow of shape.
30.) Two types of energy?
a. ) Potential energy: energy that is due to the position of a mass.
b. ) Kinetic energy: Energy that is due to the motion of a mass.
31.) Two kinds of velocity?
a. ) Constant velocity: the passing over equal distances in equal intervals of time.
b. ) Variable velocity; The passing over unequal distances in equal intervals.
