fu mai - floating pulse
floating superficial, felt with light pressure, weak at deeper levels yang, invasion of external wind yin xu (interior conditions)
chen mai -deep pulse
deep/sinking
Distinct only at the 3rd level when heavy pressure is applied.
yin, pathogenic factor in the interior (deep and full)
yang xu (deep and weak)
chi mai - slow pulse
slow fewer than 4 beats per respiration yin, cold pattern empty cold (slow and weak) full cold (slow and full)
shu mai -rapid pulse
rapid More than 5 beats per respiration heat pattern yang, full heat (rapid and full) empty heat (rapid and floating/empty)
xu mai - empty pulse
empty big but without strength, like a balloon partially filled with water deficient vacuous yin, qi xu
shi mai - full pulse
full big and strong, pounding hard against the fingers at all three depths. excess yang, full pattern full heat (full and rapid) full cold (full and slow)
hong mai - surging pulse
overflowing surging flooding surges with the strength of a big pulse, hitting the fingers at all 3 depths but leaves the fingers with less strength like a receding wave full yin within yang full heat empty heat (overflowing and empty)
xi mai - thin pulse
fine thin thready yin, blood xu dampness with severe qi xu
hua mai - slippery pulse
slippery
rolling

phlegm, dampness, food retention, pregnancy
se mai - choppy pulse
choppy hesitant rough yin, blood xu exhaustion of fluids
xuan mai - wiry pulse
wiry string-taught string-like yang, liver disharmony pain phlegm
