Pudendal Arteries and Nerve Flashcards
What is the origin of the internal pudendal artery?
Its the last branch of the anterior division of internal iliac artery.
Where does the internal pudendal artery supply blood?
External genitalia.
Erectile tissues of the external genitalia.
What is the journey of the internal pudendal artery?
Goes out through the greater sciatic foramen, travels posteriorly behind sacrospinous ligament, and travels into the lesser sciatic foramen. It’s then in the perineum.
where do the superficial and deep external pudendal arteries arise from?
The femoral artery.
which artery supplies blood to the perineum?
Internal pudendal artery.
Which route does the pudendal nerve take?
It takes the same route as the internal pudendal artery.
What sensory innervation does the pudendal nerve have?
It is largely sensory, partly motor.
Which vertebrae level does the pudendal nerve come from?
Ventral Rami (anterior division of) S2, S3, S4.
Where does the pudendal nerve exit the pelvis?
Greater sciatic foramen, beside the sciatic nerve below the piriformis.
What motor innervation does the pudendal nerve have?
External anal sphincter
External urethral sphincter
Innervates the muscles which carry out erectile function.
Innervates part of elevator ani.
What are the branches of the pudendal nerve?
Dorsal nerve of penis/clitoris.
Inferior rectal nerve.
Perineal nerve.
What makes up the pudendal canal?
Which two muscles does the pudendal nerve travel between?
Below piriformis
Above coccygeus/ischiococcygeus.
What forms Alocks canal?
Fascia of the obturator internus muscle.
Which bony prominence does the pudendal nerve run close to?
The ischial spine.
