16
Q

Neutralizes HCL, stimulate gastric mucosal defenses, aiding in ulcer healing, Provide rapid relief of ulcer symptoms

A

Antacids

17
Q

Antacids causes _______
Best taken ______ after meals

A

Constipation
1-2 hours

18
Q

Inhibit histamine binding to the receptors on the gastric parietal cells to reduce gastric acid secretion

A

H2 Receptor blockers

19
Q

H2 receptor blockers is best taken in the ____ and ___ (twice a day)

A

morning and bedtime

20
Q

SE of H2 receptor blockers (ADDCW)

A

Confusion
Agitation
Psychosis
Depression
Anxiety
Disorientation
Gynecomastia
Impotence
Decrease Libido

22
Q

A cytoprotective drug that coats the ulcers, binds to proteins in the ulcer base, forming a protective barrier against acid, bile and pepsin. It also stimulates the secretion of mucus, HCO3 and prostaglandin

A

Sucralfate

23
Q

When should sucralfate be administered?

A

on empty stomach (30-60 minutes before meals)

24
Q

Common SE of sucralfate

A

constipation

25
Q

Sucralfate should be administered ___ apart from antacid

A

1 hour

26
Q

Replaces gastric prostaglandin, promote ulcer healing by stimulating mucus and bicarbonate secretions and by inhibiting acid secretion

A

Prostaglandin Analogue

27
Q

Cytotec should be administered with?

A

meals

28
Q

Common SE of prostaglandin analogue

A

Diarrhea
Abd pain

29
Q

Suppresses gastric acid secretion, bind the acid secreting enzyme (H+K+ ATPase)

A

Proton Pump Inhibitors

30
Q

Common SE of PPI

A

Headache
Abd pain
Nausea
Diarrhea

31
Q

H. Pylori Drug Treatment

A

o Flagyl (metronidazole)
o Achromycin (tetracycline)

32
Q

Nsg consi for H.pylori tx

A

a. Advise client to avoid alcohol when on Flagyl therapy (to prevent disulfiram-like manifestations)
b. Tetracycline is teratogenic (contraindicated in pregnancy)
c. Advise the client to avoid alcohol (to prevent disulfiram-like manifestations

33
Q

Disulfiram-like manifestations (HHNTPCDRC)

A

Headache
Hypotension
Nausea and vomiting
Tachycardia
Palpitations
Chest pain
Dyspnea
Respiraory and circulatory collapse
Convulsions

34
Q

Nsg interventions

A

a. Balanced meals at regular intervals (DAT – avoid fatty, spicy and other irritants)
b. Bland or restrictive diets are no longer necessary Bland diet only during exacerbation)
c. Small, frequent feeding during exacerbations
d. Mild alcohol intake is not harmful (as long as not excessive)
e. Smoking discouraged (contains nicotine)
f. Regular pattern of exercise (can release stress – endorphins)
g. Stress reduction at home
h. Develop recreation and hobbies; coping through stress
i. Avoid the following (irritants):
 Fatty foods, coffee, chocolate, cola drinks, spices, Red/black pepper(irritants)
 Bed time snacks (to prevent night-time reflux/regurgitation)
 Binge eating (to prevent ↑gastric motility)
 Large quantities of milk (milk is alkaline: increases HCL secretion to neutralize it, causing rebound acidity)
 Recommended milk intake per day: 400mLs of milk or 2 glasses/day
