What barriers to health do homeless people face?
- Can’t access health care
- Lack of integration between primary care and other agencies
- People don’t prioritorise their health
- Don’t know where to find help
- Communication difficulties
Define refugee:
Person granted asylum and refugee status in the UK with the rights of UK citizen
Define asylum seeker:
Person applying for refugee status: entitled to £35 a week, housing and NHS care
What barriers to care do asylum seekers and refugees face?
- Language/cultural/communication problems.
- Money/other priorities.
- Different perceptions of care.
- Racism, prejudice, discrimination, stigma.
- May not understand how the NHS works.
What is social exclusion?
Process of shut out from social, economic, political or cultural systems which determine social integration of person in society
Why might someone experience loneliness?
- Poor health, sensory impairment
- Poverty
- Housing issues
- Fear of crime
- Lack of transport
- Discrimination
Signs of loneliness:
- Talkative, clinging
- Lives alone
- Recent bereavement or transition
- Mobility problem or sensory impairment
