What happens at puberty?
Your body starts releasing sex hormones
What is the main hormone for men?
Testosterone
What is the main hormone in women?
oestrogen
What happens at stage 1 of the menstrual cycle?
menstruation starts - uterus lining breaks down for 4 days
What happens at stage 2 of the menstrual cycle?
Uterus lining builds up - day 4 -14 full of blood vessels to receive a fertilised egg.
What happens at stage 3 of the menstrual cycle?
An egg develops and is released from the ovary - day 15 ovulation
What happens at stage 4 of the menstrual cycle?
The wall is then maintained until day 28 as if no fertilised egg has landed on the uterus wall the lining starts to break down
What is FSH?
Follicle-Stimulating hormone
produced by the pituitary gland
causes egg to mature in one of the ovaries
stimulates ovaries to produce oestrogen
What is oestrogen?
produced in ovaries
causes lining of uterus to grow
stimulates release of LH
What is LH
Luteinising hormone
produced by pituitary gland
stimulates release of egg at day 14
What is progesterone?
produced in ovaries
maintains lining of uterus during second half of cycle
