How can oestrogen prevent fertility?
if taken every day it can keep the level high so it doesn’t allow FSH to be released
How can progesterone prevent fertility?
Stimulates production of thick mucus so it stops sperm from reaching the egg
What are the side effects of the pill?
headaches and nausea and doesn’t protect against STIs
What is a contraceptive patch?
Same as the pill but stuck to skin and needs to be replaced every week
What is a contraceptive implant?
produces progesterone stops ovaries producing egg and makes it hard for sperm to get to the egg
What is a IUD?
A t shaped device that is inserted into the uterus to kill sperm and prevents implantation of fertilised eggs
What are 3 non hormonal barriers?
condoms - prevent STIs
Diaphragm - Cup that fixes over cervix
Spermicide - not very effective
What are more drastic ways to avoid pregnancy?
sterilisation - cutting/tying fallopian tubes/sperm duct
Natural methods - avoiding sexual intercourse when fertile
Abstinence - not having sex
