Puberty and Sexual Maturity Flashcards
Puberty
The process to which reproductive organs mature to functionality
The onset of puberty requires?
the secretion of GnRH to stimulate gonadotropin release
Gonadotropin
promotes gametogenesis, steroidgenesis and development of reproductive tracts
When is the number of GnRH neurons, distribution and morphology determined?
Before the onset of puberty
Presynatpic neurons for GnRH are influenced by:
plane of nutrition, exposure to environmental or social cues, genetics
What is the definition of puberty in the female?
The age at which female as 1st estrous cycle and can support a gestation without deleterious effect
What is the definition of puberty in the male?
The age at which male has first ejaculation contains a number of spermatozoa able to produce fertilization
Factors effecting the onset of puberty in the female
BCS, environmental stimulus or social cues, degree of body fat, metabolic status and signals, and GnRH activity
What is a Body Condition Score?
the degree of body fat an individual has
what is the lipostatic hypothesis?
adipose tissue critical for reproductive maturation
How does leptin influence the female puberty?
stimulates GnRH neurons
Where is leptin produced?
adipocytes (greater amount of fat, greater amount of leptin)
