Endocrinology of the Male Flashcards
Epididymis
is the site of final spermatozoa maturation and sperm storage
accessory sex glands
produce seminal plasma
Penis
copulatory organ
Normal hormone pattern repeats how often?
every 4-6 hours
Sertoli cells function to
produce inhibin, neg feedback loop on the anterior lobe of the pituitary to suppress FSH secretion
Leydig cells produce
testosterone
LH binds to what cells?
leydig cells, promote the production of testosterone
What are the goals of spermatogenesis?
provide a continual supply of male gametes, genetic diversity, produce billions of sperm each day
What occurs in the proliferation phase of spermatogenesis?
Spermatogonia undergo mitotic division to primary spermatocytes
What occurs in the Meiotic phase of spermatogenesis?
Primary spermatocytes undergo meiosis to secondary spermatocytes
What occurs in the differentiation phase of spermatogenesis?
Spermatids (haploid) differentiate to spermatozoa
What occurs in the golgi phase of sperm formation?
golgi vesicles fuse and proximal centriole forms attachment site for the tail
What occurs in the cap phase of sperm formation?
The distal centriole forms the tail, with a cap forming the inner and outer acromosal membrane, with enzymes
What occurs in the acrosome phase of sperm formation?
Neck and annulus are formed
What occurs in the maturation phase of sperm formation?
Mitochondria forms around the flagellum, post nuclear cap forms and annulus forms
