PUBLIC BATHS
A
-There were 4 large thermae in Pompeii: The Forum baths, Central Baths, Stabian Baths and Sarno baths
-Roman Baths and bathing Practices= The combined relaxation and leisure activities under one roof, and promoted the bodily health and fitness of patrons. They provided large gymnasia, open courts and exercise equipment. Most people would have gone to one of the public baths, not only to wash but also to socialize.
The discovery of lamps in the Stabian baths suggests either they were open after dark or bathers made their way to the baths before daylight

AMPITHEATRE
A
- One of the first buildings constructed after the town became roman colony in 80 BC
- An inscription tells us it was built by 2 wealthy Pompeians, Caius Valgus, and Marcus Porcius

PALAESTRA
A
- The large Palaestra was a large open space surrounded on 3 sides by a colonnade and had a swimming pool in the middle.
- the open area was used for gymnastics and wrestling.

LARGE THEATRE
A
- One of the oldest buildings still standing in P
- Can seat up to 5000 spectators
- Stage was built during the reign of the emperor Augustus.
- Remains of the original Greek stages were found in excavations
- actors performed Greek and Roman tragedies and comedies. Plays were performed in daylight.
- excavations below the level of the orchestra pit revealed the remains of basin and containers that show that water was used in perfromances.

ODEON
A
- Used for musical, mime and poetry performances
- had a seating for about 1000 people
- Steps of the seating area are almost perfectly preserved
- An inscription tells that the ODEON was paid for by a duumviri, gaius Valgus and Marcus Porcius, who also commissioned the amphitheaters.
