STREETS
When compared with the streers of Pompeii, there are fewer traces of the traffic in it
- There are no marks worn into roads by the repeated traffic of heavily loaded carts, there are no pedestrian stepping stones
- The step up to the road is not high
- H was equipped wih an excellent drainage system, and a large sewer carried rain water and waste out into the sea.
WATER SUPPLY
-obtained water from aquaducts—large bridges that brought the city’s water supplies
FORUM-Centre of economic, social, Religious, Political and Judicial life.
- Part of the forum of H has been located beneath the modern town of Resina, but is not yet excavated.
- H used its ‘decumanus maximus’ ( main street) as a forum.
RELIGIOUS
-In the area of the Forum, is the Collegium of the Augustales, the custodians of the cult emperor.
It is a square building with 4 columns.
The Palaestra:
In the Palaestra stood a grand statue of Hercules. Surrounding the open ground were temples to hermes and Hgeia.
-Hermes was the messenger god in greek mythology
- Hygeia was the goddess of good health.
POLITICAL
The Basillica:
- Here ministers had their office, commercial and entertainment licenses were issued and law cases heard.
- was either damaged or destroyed in the 62 AD earthquake and was rebuilt by Proconsul Marcus Nonius Balbus
- Statues of his family, himself and his son adorn the walls
- The building was only partly excavated in the early years using the tunneling method
BATHS
Forum Baths:
-Their position between two main streets made them conveniently between the buildings and the Forum.
-The baths were large enough to accommodate separate sections for men and women.
-They had public toilets and magnificent mosaics of sea creatures.
-Five skeletons were discovered in the men’s dressing room, four men and a woman.
Suburban Baths:
-The entrance to the bath was through a hanging garden bearing the statue of the proconsul, Nonius Balbus, who gave the bath to the town as a gift.
- While form baths were for use of general public, suburban baths appear to have operated as an exclusive club for wealthy.
-Contained private dining room
-in one entrance area of a suburban bath, statue of god Apollo stands. Water still flows into the basins from original pipes.
PALAESTRA
- Large sporting complex that occupied a whole block.
- Had large open grounds, a cross shaped swimming pool measuring almost 50 m long, and a smaller deeper pool as well
- A grand statue stood of the towns patron hero, Hercules.
- Surrounding the open grounds were the temples to Hermes and Hygeian, meeting rooms and a spacious upper gallery
