Pteridophytes Flashcards
what are pteridophytes?
ferns
environmental conditions and adaptation of pteridophytes
moist/ shady
waxy cuticle to prevent dessication
Vascular tissue?
well developed
Structure of both generations (5)
sporophytic:
Fronds- a group of leaves (pinna) growing from a rhizome
Sori- clusters of sporangia on the underside of the pinna ( has indicium which flaps in wind)
rhizome-horizontal stem of which roots grow adventitiously for anchorage and absorption
True roots/ leaves/ stem
Gametophytic:
Prothallus- heart-shaped structure (male and female gametes with rhizoid for anchorage and absorption
life cycle/ reproduction?
asexual- spores get dispersed by flapping indicium in wind- spores then germinate into prothallus(sexual) - has male (antheridium) and female(archegonium) gametes- male uses water to fertilize ova- zygote develops into sporophytic generation
Initially parasitic of the prothallus
which is the more dominant generation?
sporophytic
