Psyychodynamic Perspective Flashcards
Psychodynamic theory key principles
Our behaviour is a result of an interaction between unconscious innate drives and early experiences
The triparite structure of mind
The mind can be likened to an iceberg
What is the First Lady of the triparite structure to develop
THE ID
(Biological, primitive, insurances and drives)
Present at birth
Driven by pleasure principle, which operates in the unconscious
What is the second stage of the tripartite structure
THE EGO
the realistic part
1-3 years
Driven by the reality, principle, meditates between the needs of the ID and superego
Considers social realities and Norma, etiquette and rules in deciding how to behave
What is the 3rd part of the tripartite stage
The SUPER EGO The moral part 3-5 years Driven by anxiety principle Developed from societal and parental standards of what is appropriate behaviour
How can we access the unconscious
Projective tests
Free association
Dream analysis
Hypnosis
What are the psychosexual stages of development
The oral - the ID is in control
The anal - the EGO develops at this stage
The phallic - driven by anxiety principle SUPEREGO
The latency- 6 years to puberty, nothing much happens at this stage, sexual energy is out to one side whilst other important physical and intellectual development takes place
The genital - puberty to adult, this is the final stage and marks the transition into adult sexuality
Strengths of the psychodynamic perspective theory
Psychodynamic theories drew attention to the psychological causes of mental disorder.
These have been successful helping people with a variety of mental health problems
Use of the cast study gives us in depth data which is useful for insight into the way people think and feel
Weakness of psychodynamic theory
Concepts are too vague - lack of scientific support
Theory is based on the use of unrepresentative samples
The techniques are not objective and open to bias
Highly determinist
