  • typical antipsychotic drugs block dopamine receptors, preventing the stimulation of post synaptic neurons by dopamine
  • depress the RAS limiting stimuli coming into the brain

Atypical antipsychotic block both dopamine & serotonin

Adverse effects for Antipsychotic / Neuroleptic Drug

CNS:
drowsy/sedation
weakness
tremors 
extrapyramidal effects 
-pseudoparkinsonsim
-dystonia (spasm)
-akathisia (restlessness)
-tardive dyskinesia (smacking lips)
-neuroleptic malignant syndrome (increased fever, muscle rigidity,  change in BP, can be fatal)
Anticholinergic:
constipation, dry mouth, nasal congestion
