Definition of delusion
A fixed false belief that is firmly held despite evidence of the contrary
Goes against the individuals normal social and cultural beliefs
Definition of hallucination
Perception in the absence of an external stimulus

What is schizotypal disorder
No hallucinations or delusions

What is schizoaffective disorder
Mood symptoms meet criteria of either a depressive illness or manic episode WITH 1 or 2 symptoms of schizophrenia
Definition of schizophrenia
Condition characterised by:
Hallucinations, Delusions, Thought disorders, Fragmentation of boundaries of the self
Leads to functional impairment and is not due to organic disease, alcohol/drugs, a mood disorder.
What are the negative symptoms of schizophrenia
Avolition - reduced ability to initiate and persist in goal directed behaviour
Asocial behaviour
Anhedonia
Poverty of speech - decrease in speech output

Types of schizophrenia
Paranoid
Hebephrenic - thought disorganisation
Catatonic - reduced or excessive motor activity
Simple - negative symptoms without positive
Undifferentiated - doesn’t conform to subtype
Residual - 1 year of negative symptoms following psychotic episode
ICD10 criteria for diagnosing schizophrenia
At least 1 month of
1 of - thought interference, passivity, running commentary, delusions
OR
2 of - hallucinations other than running commentary, loose associations, catatonic symptoms, negative symptoms
