Definition of delirium
Acute, transient, global organic disorder of CNS.
Results in impaired consciousness and attention

Management of delirium
Treat underlying cause
Reorientate patient e.g face clock, give them a calendar, written information on where they are
Encourage visitors
Continuity of care
Avoid relocating
Monitor bowel movements and urine output
Avoid benzodiazepines (haloperidol for agitation)
Definition of dementia
Global impairment of memory, intellect and personality without impairment of consciousness
Leads to functional impairment (ADLs) and present for >6 months
Reversible causes of dementia
Normal pressure hydrocephalus Intracranial tumour Thiamine deficiency B12/folic acid deficiency Hypothyroidism Cushing's syndrome
