Psychosexual stages Flashcards
What is the oral stage?
Occurs from birth to first year. Sucking, eating, breastfeeding.
What does future oral fixation result in?
Problems with drinking, eating, smoking, and nail-biting.
What is the anal stage?
1-3 years. Bowel and bladder. Toilet training will lead to accomplishment and independence. Freud believed success in this stage led to competence, productivity, and creativity.
What is anal-retentive
To be string cut, orderly, rigid, or obsessive.
What is anal-expulsive?
To be messy, wasteful, or destructive.
Define the phallic stage
3-6 years. Differentiation between male and female genitals. Oedipus or Electra complex can form. Fixation can lead to “deviancy.”
Define the latent period
6 years to puberty. Sexual feelings are inactive. Social and intellectual exploration. Develops self-confidence. Fixation can result in immaturity or the inability to develop meaningful relationships during adulthood. Superego is developing more than the id during this time.
Define the genital stage
Puberty to death. Sexual maturity. Libido is active once again. If other stages are successful, one should be balanced and caring. The ego and superego are fully formed and responses to urges are healthy.
