Therapeutic index
The ratio between the dose that produces the desired effect in 50% of the animals tested and the dose that produces toxic effects in 50% of the animal tested
Tolerance
A decrease in the effectiveness of a drug after repeated administrations
Sensitization
An increase in the effectiveness of a drug after repeated administrations
Antagonist
A drug that blocks or inhibits the effects of a neurotransmitter on the postsynaptic cell
Agonist
A drug that facilitates the effects of a neurotransmitter on a postsynaptic cell

An amino acid that is the principle excitatory neurotransmitter in the brain and spinal chord
GABA
An amino acid that is a key inhibitor neurotransmitter to keep the brain stable

An amino acid that is the key inhibitory neurotransmitter in the lower brain and spinal chord

Associated with muscular movement, REM sleep, learning, and formation of memories
Dopamine
Associated with movement, attention, learning, reinforcing effects of abused drugs
Norepinephrine
Associated with an increase in vigilance and attentiveness
Serotonin
Associated with regulation of mood; control of eating, sleeping, and arousal; regulation of pain
