What is CBT
An umbrella term for a wide range of talking therapies with the goal of changing the way a person thinks
What is the rationale behind CBT
By changing the way information is processed, depressive feelings and behaviour can also be changed
How does CBT help patients
Allows them to identify and understand how their thoughts can influence how they feel and their behaviour
What does CBT use
Cognitive restructuring to replace irrational thoughts with rational ones
What is the cognitive element of CBT
Identifying the faulty thinking through questioning
What is the behavioural element of CBT
This involves setting homework for the client that helps them challenge their own irrational beliefs to prove them wrong
What is REBT
Using ABC model to encourage clients to examine beliefs about their unhappiness
What does Ellis argue causes problems
The demanding nature of the three beliefs

An acceptance of reality even when it is unfortunate

What is the time demand of CBT
It is less time consuming than some psychological therapies but not as fast as biological therapies and the waiting list is quite long

Those who’s depression is so severe that they can not think clearly and aren’t committed
How expensive is CBT
Very, as a clinical psychologist is required
Why is CBT empowering
Because the client is given control over their condition

That it is just as effective as drugs
