Social learning theory Flashcards
How do we learn other than direct experience
Through observation and imitation
How do we learn through observation
Through vicarious experience
What is our behaviour often influenced by
The consequences of other peoples actions
When are we more likely to perform behaviour
If another persons behaviour is reinforced
What is imitation
The attempt of copying a single behaviour of a role model
What is identification
The process of being influenced by a role model because they are similar to you in some way
What is modelling
The imitated behaviour displayed by an individual
What are the 4 mediations processes
Attention, retention, reproduction and motivation
What is attention
Behaviour must be attended to if it is to be reproduced
What is retention
Individuals must encode and recall behaviour by placing it into long term memory
What is reproduction
Individuals must be physically capable of producing behaviour and have the skills required
What is motivation
Individuals must expect to receive positive reinforcements for their behaviour
What does social learning theory acknowledge
The difference between humans and animals, in that thought processes are considered
What does social learning theory explain
Inconsistencies and cultural differences in behaviour
Why is it deterministic
It implies that all behaviour is determined by other people and doesn’t consider conscious ability to choose how we behave
