What is the definition of a phobia?
An irrational fear of an object/situation
What are the 3 types of phobias?
Specific (fear of an object or situation)
Social anxiety (fear of a social situation e.g. public speaking)
Agoraphobia (fear of being outside/in a public place)
What are the behavioural characteristics of phobias?
Panic - screaming/running away
Avoidance - conscious effort to avoid the phobic stimulus
Endurance - person may stay & bear it
What are the emotional characteristics of phobias?
Anxiety - an unpleasant state of high arousal (disproportionate to threat)
Fear - short lasting, more intense
Emotional response = unreasonable/disproportionate to threat
What are the cognitive characteristics of phobias?
Selective attention - cant look away
Irrational beliefs - unfounded beliefs
Cognitive distortions - unrealistic
What is the definition of depression?
A mental disorder characterised by low mood & energy levels
