Biopsychology - The Endocrine System Flashcards
What is the endocrine system?
It is a network of glands across the body that secrete chemical messages called hormones.
What are the different glands in the body?
Hypothalamus
Pituitary gland
Thyroid gland
Thymus
Pancreas
Adrenal Gland
Ovaries
Testicles
What hormones does the hypothalamus secrete?
n/a
What is the function of the hypothalamus in the endocrine system?
Stimulates & controls the release of hormones from the pituitary glands
How many lobes of the pituitary gland are there?
The anterior & posterior -> 2
What hormones does the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland secrete?
ACTH
What is the function of ACTH in the endocrine system?
Stimulates the adrenal cortex & release of cortisol during the stress response
What hormones does the posterior lobe of the pituitary gland secrete?
oxytocin
What is the function of oxytocin in the endocrine system?
Stimulates uterine contractions during childbirth
What hormones does the thyroid gland secrete?
Thyroxine
What is the function of thyroxine in the endocrine system?
regulates the metabolism
What hormones does the thymus secrete?
Thymosins
What is the function of thymosins in the endocrine system?
maturation of T-cells (more closely associated with the immune system)
What hormones does the pancreas secrete?
Insulin & Glucagon
What is the function of insulin & glucagon in the endocrine system?
To maintain healthy blood glucose levels
Insulin -> decreases blood glucose
Glucagon -> increases blood glucose
