encephalopathy
a disease in which the functioning of the brain is affected by some agent or condition (such as viral infection or toxins in the blood).
amnestic disorders
are a group of disorders that involve loss of memories previously established, loss of the ability to create new memories, or loss of the ability to learn new information.
Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome
Korsakoff syndrome is a chronic memory disorder caused by severe deficiency of thiamine (vitamin B-1). Korsakoff syndrome is most commonly caused by alcohol misuse, but certain other conditions also can cause the syndrome.
Wernicke’s encephalopathy
can then evolve into a permanent memory disorder called Korsakoff’s Amnestic Disorder
nystagmus
rapid involuntary movements of the eyes
Approximately 80% of patients with Wernicke’s encephalopathy develop
Korsakoff’s Psychosis
