What is depression?
Depression is a mode affective disorder. You must have a depressed mood or loss of pleasure in daily activities for more than 2 weeks to get diagnosed with depression and you must have 5 out of the 9 official symptoms.
What is Aaron Beck’s take on depression?
Aaron Beck says that people with depression process information differently (in a negative way).
What is cognitive bias?
When people with depression are prone to distorting and mis-interpreting information.
What are the 3 main psychological effects depression has on the brain?
- Cognitions are biased
- They have negative thoughts about themselves, the future and the world (negative triad).
- They over generalise situations.
What is Catastrophising?
Making a situation a big deal.
What is our schema?
A pocket of information about how a situation works based on past experiences.

How does cognitive behavioural therapy aim to help people with depression?
- Aims to identify and challenge the negative automatic thoughts held by individuals,s about themselves and their world.
- Aims to help people become aware of when they make negative interpretations.
- Aims to help people develop alternative ways of thinking and behaving.
