Psychology chapter 6 - consciousness Flashcards
Consciousness
Awareness of ourselves and our environment
Automatic/unconscious/implicit processing (also anchoring)
Can be performed without conscious awareness or effort.
form of unconscious processing, used in advertising, anchoring you towards a certain number.
Controlled/conscious/explicit processing
The conscious use of attention and effort
Priming (unconscious process)
exposure to a stimulus
influences (i.e, primes) how you subsequently respond to that same or another stimulus
- the subtle presentation of information under the treshold of consciousness
- seeing something unconsciously can prime the response
- even if we’re not aware of information, we can still process it
- this can influence people there decisions and beliefs
Think about that movie with the bets!!)
automaticy
The more we do a task, the less conscious attention we need to apply to it
Law of effect
behavior that is followed by pleasant consequences is likely to be repeated
Theory of behaviour/what drives our behaviour
Whether or not you want to do well on something (example how well you want to study (study=the behaviour you want to do well)
The more you want to well, the better the behaviour?
Associative
Learning relationship between cue, behaviour and reward (stimulus - response - outcome)
Habit advantage
efficient, easy, fast, low effort, automatic
Habit disadvantage
Inflexible (they are great until you have to change them)
Perception
Robust system that can draw conclusions based on the perceived noisy data if we have prior expectations
Is inference (gevolgtrekking) your brain is customer to fill in blanks - you produce perception
Visual agnosia
Inability to visually recognise objects (not blindnes) (cause: lesions)
