Psychology Flashcards
working memory model
describes short term memory as a system with multiple components (shows difficulty with focusing on two items at the same time within the same modality)
Central Executive
is the control system of the cognitive process
Visuospatial sketchpad
Inner eye - Holds visual + spacial info. (images + shapes)
Episodic Buffer
Coordinates the actions of other systems + links information to long term memory
Phonological Loop
Inner Ear - Holds speech material (listening) Inner Voice - Converts visual info into sounds (reading)
Multi store memory model
structure of memory
Sensory memory
Five senses (store for 1-4 s) is lost unless transferred to short term memory
Short term memory
can hold 7 items for 6-12 s - is lost unless rehearsed (rehearsal results in long term memory)
Long term memory
unlimited capacity and duration
Informed consent
before research, subject must e informed and agree to terms (if subject is a minor parental consent is required)
Deception
some deception is allowed w/ no harm (all must be revealed at the end)
right to withdraw
Subject is allowed to withdraw anytime (data must be rid of if asked)
confidentiality
no info about participant is to be revealed (all data disclosed)
Protection from physical + mental harm
Participants may not be harmed in any way (no force used to reveal private info)
debriefing
At the end of a study, participant must be told if deception was used and the purpose of the study
Random
Every member in the target population has an equal chance of getting selected
Connivence/opportunity
selecting people who are available and willing to participate at any time (may be a bias)
Volunteer
people choose to be in the study
Snowball
participants already in the study recruit more participants
Purposive
chosen because of necessary characteristics
Field experiment
natural environment (hospital, school)
Quasi experiment
people are chosen off of a characteristic
Natural experiment
individuals are exposed to the experimental and control conditions that are determined by nature or by other factors outside the control of the investigators.
