Bio terms Flashcards
Genotype
Alleles possessed by an organism (XX)
Phenotype
characteristics of an organism (Looks)
Homozygous
two identical alleles (same)
Heterozygous
two different alleles (Different)
Dominant allele
allele that has the same effect on the phenotype whether it is present in homozygous or heterozygous state
Recessive allele
allele that only has an effect on a phenotype when in a homozygous state
Co-dominant alleles
pairs of alleles that both affect the phenotype when present with a heterozygote
test cross
testing a suspected heterozygote by crossing it with a known homozygous recessive
carrier
individual that has a recessive allele of a gene that does not have an effect on their phenotype
pure-breeding
individuals of the same phenotype that when crossed with eachother, produce offspring that as well have the same phenotype
sex linkage
association of a characteristic with gender because the gene controlling the characteristic is on a sex chromosome
allele
alternative forms of a gene that arise by mutation and found at the same place on a chromosome
gametes
unfertilized reproductive cells (haploid)
zygote
fertilized egg
trophic levels
portion of a certain species within a food web
