Automatic thoughts
Habitual, instantaneous thoughts that are generated internally and affect our mood and behaviour
Cognitive distortions
Self-generated misrepresentations of reality, often representing the underlying assumptions for automatic thoughts, which reinforce maladaptive perceptions of the self
Double-blind hypothesis
Proposes that the cause of schizophrenia was a consistent and contradictory pattern of relating from parent to child
Effectiveness
The ability of a treatment to produce a desired effect in real-world settings
Efficacy
The ability of a treatment to produce a desired effect in highly controlled settings
Ego
Bridging the 3 levels of awareness, is responsible for executing the urges of the id in a way that is acceptable
Ego dystonic disorders
Characterized by the symptoms of the disorder being perceived by the individual as UNdesirable
Ego syntonic disorders
Characterized by the symptoms of the disorder being perceived by the individual as Desirable
Electroconvulsive therapy
Procedure involving the brief passage of electrical current through electrodes, stimulates seizure
Empathy
The therapist makes every effort to understand the client’s feelings and validates them
Exposure
The therapist guides the patient in putting themselves into a state of deep relaxation using practiced techniques, then guides them to imagine themselves in a feared situation
Extratherapeutic factors
Factors that operate outside of the therapy itself
Free association
The patient is encouraged to let their mind wander, report content to therapist
Generalized seizure
A sudden, widespread alteration in electrical signalling across both hemispheres in brain
Genuineness
The therapist is present as a congruent human being in the social relationship
