Attachment styles (3) and define
-Secure: Children are sad to see parents go and happy when they come back
-Anxious/Ambivalent: Children are anxious about the parents being gone, clingy when they come back
-Avoidant: Children are aloof and distant, don’t care if the parent is gone or comes back
Attachment theory assumes there’s no learning that occurs outside of early childhood
Deficiencies in caregiving
-Will create an insecure attachment style
-Intimate partner violence may be a result of an anxious attachment
Types of empathy (2) and define
-Affective: Being able to feel what others feel (emotional component); crying at a movie or a commercial
-Cognitive: Understanding how someone might feel in a given situation
Psychopaths
Have low affective empathy, high rates of recidivism and chronic offenders. Lack of empathy is a core feature of being antisocial (affective or cognitive).
-Have cognitive empathy which makes them better at manipulating people.
-Animal cruelty is an early warning sign for antisocial behaviour or violent behaviour to humans
Cognitive and Language Deficits
Often interferes with socialization and the ability to get along with others; often plays into peer rejection
-Independent of IQ
-Low problem-solving
-Poor academic performance can affect how treated by teachers
-When we have deficits, it is hard to organize thoughts and problem solve. May increase aggression.
Intelligence
There is an inverse relationship between IQ scores and delinquency
-Incarcerated populations 2/3 of the standard deviation lower than normal people
-Poor verbal IQ important indicator
-Historically difference in IQ scores based on race (more SES)
ADHD
A leading psychological diagnosis for American children; 52-82% kids with ADHD experience peer rejection
-Substance abuse and delinquency; under-active reward system, higher likelihood of. being diagnosed with CD
