someone is placed in mental health facility without their consent. threat to self, threat to others
major depressive disorder
“common cold” of psychological disorders. 5-6 episodes over course of lifetime. can produce severe impairment: feeling down, tired, irritable, no energy
dysthymic disorder
milder, longer lasting form of deppression
bipolar disorder
experience depression and also experience mania. Explanations: genetics, stressful life events, positive live events
Why is suicide important to talk about in relation to
mental health and specifically with Bipolar and
Anxiety
heightened risk, major depression and bipolar are associated higher than other disorders
Generalized Anxiety Disorder:
anxious thoughts, irritable, edgy, trouble sleeping, tension, 60% of day worrying.
panic attacks
intense bouts of fear, terror
panic disorder
panic attacks are repeated, unexpected, associated with history of fear or separation from parent in childhood
phobias
intense fear of an object or situation out of proportion to its actual threat. Restrict our life
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder:
persistent, ideas, thoughts, and urges that cause repeated behaviors to reduce or prevent distress
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD):
experience or witness a traumatic event. Flashbacks, avoiding reminders, recurrent dreams, difficulty sleeping and exaggerated startle responses
