What is cognitive behavioural therapy?

A

A process which aims to identify thoughts, feelings and behaviours, assess whether unrealistic/unhelpful. Patient given homework to challenge thoughts etc. Focus on the here and now, short term. It is problem focussed and goal orientated

What is behavioural activation?

A

Works on avoidance, and focuses on the avoided activities as therapists schedule in time for these activities - patients analyse unintended consequences to their actions. Small changes build to long term goals. It has a structured agenda and can be used to review progress

What is interpersonal therapy?

A

IPT works for 12-16w, focused on the present. A “sick role” is given to the patient and they construct an interpersonal map and focus areas are maintained. The goal with IPT is to reduce depressive symptoms, and increase interpersonal functioning. Requires ability to reflect and not all patients will have strong social networks

What is motivational interviewing?

A

The principles of MI are to: express empathy, avoid argument and support self efficacy. It promotes behaviour change and involves all the stages of change eg precontemplation, contemplation, planning/determination, action, maintenance
