What are the symptoms of and treatment for depression?

A

Symptoms - form of sadness, change of mood, change in thought context, change in bodily function, change in psychomotor function, loss of interest, withdrawal, irritability,apathy, loss of concentration

Treatment: antidepressants eg SSRI, psychological eg CBT, physical eg ECT

What are the symptoms of and treatment for mania?

A

Symptoms: elevation of mood, increased energy, activity, increased sexual energy, sociability, over familiarity, may be irritable
Hypo does not affect ability to work & function, mania does

Treatment: antipsychotics eg olanzaprine, mood stabilisers eg sodium valproate, lithium, physical eg ECT

How are affective disorders classified according to ICD10?

A

Depression: present for >2w, no hypo manic/manic episodes, not attributable to psychoactive drugs or organic cause.
Mild = general criteria +/>2 of main signs, OR >4+ minor
Moderate = gc, 2ms, OR >6+ minor
Severe = gc, 2mjs, OR >8+ minor
If psychotic symptoms present it is severe

Bipolar: repeated episodes (2+) of depression + mania/hypomania. Needs mania but not depression to be diagnosed
