What is the need for relatedness?
The fundamental human need to form close, emotionally satisfying bonds with others
What is relatedness need satisfaction?
Feelings of warmth, closeness, and benevolence
What is self-disclosure?
Sharing personal information about the self
–> we tend to like people who share with us and like people more after sharing with them
What is percieved partner responsivness? What are the 3 key parts of a supportive response?
the feeling that someone truly listens, understands, and cares about you
1) Understanding: accurately grasping the other person’s thoughts ad feeling
2) Validation: communicating acceptance and appreciation for the other person’s perspective and personal qualities
3) Caring:
demonstrating genuine concern and showing up when help is needed
What are exchange versus communal relationships?
Exchange relationships: transactional, reciprocal relationships where people do not feel obligated to care about others needs beyond fairness
communal relationships: based on mutual care and concern, relationships where people monitor and respond to each other’s needs without expecting direct repayment
Which kind of relationship is better?
Depending on what you want ig (?) but communal relationships better satify need for relatedness because they provide emotional support and genuine connection
What are the benefits of relatedness support?
Boosts vitality and overall well-being
Reduces feelings of loneliness and depression
Leads to: Increased engagement in school, work, and daily life, lower dropout rates and stronger persistence in school, greater personal growth, resilience to stress, and higher SE, key to internalization
Why is relatedness key to internalization?
Feeling connected to others helps us adopt their values and behaviours more easily, especially when we trust their support
- emotional distance prevents internalization leading to a rejection of others’ values
