  2. Ego - 6 months - reality principle - mediates conflicting demands of id and reality, realistic, rational, planning
  3. Superego - 4-5 y.o. - society’s values/standards, via parents, attempts to block id

Freud’s developmental theory stages and key points

  • Stages: Oral, Anal, Phallic, Latency, Genital
  • Id’s libido focused on each body part
  • Anxiety - due to external or internal threat due to arising conflict btwn id’s impulses and demands of superego or reality
  • Defense mechanisms - used when ego is unable to ward of danger rationally or realistically - operate unconsciously and distort reality - Rationalization - most common
