First = orientation, hesitant participation, search for meaning, dependency
Second - Conflict, dominance, and rebellion
Third = development of cohesiveness
Group therapy therapeutic factors
Therapy group is social microcosm that allows for curative factors such as instillation of hope, universality, altruism, interpersonal learning, self-understanding and insight, existential learning, catharsis, group cohesiveness (most helpful) family re-enactment, guidance, and indentification (least helpful)
Role of Group Therapist
- Creation and maintenance of group
- Culture building
- Activation and illumination of the here and now.
- Process Illumination: here is what you are doing, how it makes others feel, influences others opinions of you, and affects your opinion of your self.
Application and Evaluation
No group + individual
Evaluation helps prevent dropout.
Good candidates have problems of interpersonal nature.
Contraindications = incompatibility with group norms for acceptable behav, cannot tolerate groups, severe dep and withdrawal, paranoia, acute psychosis, brain damage, and sociopathy.
Feminist Therapy Overview
- Attention to power differences btwn women and men and how this influences women and men’s behavior.
- Intrapsychic events always occur and must be interpreted within an oppressive social context
Feminist Therapy: Maladaptive behavior
Symptoms are:
- related to the nature of traditional feminine roles or conflicts that are inherent to those roles
- Survival tactics/means of exercising power
- Arbitrar labels assigned by society to impose sanctions or exert control

Empowerment, and helping re-define and self-determine.
