What are the assumptions of the psychodynamic approach?
A
- Our behaviour is determined more by psychological forces rather than imitation, genes
- We are born with instincts which influence our unconscious mind and cause us to behave the way we do

What is the ‘id’
A
- Part of our unconscious which contains basic instincts and drives
- Operates on pleasure principle

What is the ‘ego’
A
- Represents our conscious self
- Developed in early childhood
- Tries to balance the demands of id with moral rules imposed by the superego

What is the ‘superego’
A
- Develops later in childhood through identification with the same sex parent
- The child internalises the moral rules and social norms of society

What is ‘repression’
A
An unconscious mechanism which keeps disturbing or threatening thoughts from becoming conscious

A
Blocking external events from awareness

What is displacement
A
Satisfying an impulse (e.g aggression) with a substitute object

A
A movement back in psychological time when one is faced with stress
