Behaviourist Approach Flashcards
1
Q
How do behaviourists believe we learn behaviour?
A
- Classical conditioning : learning through association
- Operant conditioning : learning through consequences
2
Q
What are assumptions of the behaviourist approach?
A
- Humans are born as “blank slates” (tabula rasa) who learn from experience
- All species learn the same way
- We should only study observable behaviour
3
Q
What are the principles of classical conditioning?
A
Unconditioned stimulus -> Unconditioned response
Neutral stimulus -> Neutral response
Unconditioned stimulus + Neutral stimulus -> Unconditioned response
Conditioned stimulus -> Conditioned response

Q
What was the Little Albert Experiment? (Classical conditioning)
A
- Albert was presented a rat and showed no fear
- Shown a rat w/ a loud bang and Albert cried
- Continuously associated rat with bang causing him to experience fear at the sight of it
- Fear continued to other white stimuli

Q
What is operant conditioning?
A
A type of learning that takes place because of actions and rewards. Rewards act as reinforcers for the action to be repeated.
