Define the id
The selfish and impulsive part of the mind that’s present from birth. It is demanding and aim’s to gain pleasure at any cost without considering consequences. It’s based in the unconscious
Define the ego
The rational part of the mind that develops about the age of 2. Its role is to reduce the conflict between the demands of the id and the super ego and manages this by employing a number of defence mechanisms realistic and compromising.
Define the super ego
The moralistic part of mind (sense of right and wrong) that develops at the age of 4. It aims to perfect and civilise behaviour and represents the moral standards of the child’s same-sex parent. It’s role is to punish the ego for wrongdoing .through guilt.
Define denial
An ego defence mechanism whereby anxiety is reduced simply by denying that there is a problem.
Define displacement
A form of ego defence where the individual unconsciously redirects the
threating emotion from the person or thing that has caused it onto a third party.
Define repression
A form of ego defence whereby anxiety provoking material is kept out of conscious awareness as a means of coping.
Define sublimation
Transforms unacceptable impulses into socially acceptable behaviour.
