When behaviour differs from the common standards expected in society. Society collectively determines what is normal and/or abnormal.

real life application
What are the limitations of Statistical Infrequency/Deviation?
Not all abnormal behaviour are infrequent which causes an issue with defining abnormality and It fails to take into account the desirability of behaviour, only its frequency.

Issues using social/cultural norms to define abnormality and Lacks temporal validity
What is the strength of Deviation from ideal mental health?
Can target particular areas that are preventing you from having ideal mental health. Covers most reasons as to why someone would seek help from mental health services.
What are the limitations of Deviation from ideal mental health?
It sets an unrealistically high standard for mental health. Very few of us meet all criteria (give e.g)’s, classing us all as potentially mentally unhealthy, Characteristics related to the ideal mental health are only relevant to Western culture. E.g. self actualisation is too indulgent and selfish in collectivist culture such as China, as they should strive to meet the needs of the group and not aim for achieving your own potential and Too subject and vague, self report techniques are used- can’t really judge your own mental health.
What is the strength of Failure to function adequately?
It takes a holistic view of the individual and their experiences
What are the limitations of Failure to function adequately?
Not all abnormal individuals will fail to function adequately, Relies on honest disclosure of patient and Diagnosis is based on the subjective judgements of doctor not always correct and in agreement.
