Biological Approach Flashcards
Define genetics
The study of heredity and the variation of inherited characteristics.
Define Monozygotic twins (MZ)
Identical twins that share 100% of their genes.
Define Dizygotic twins (DZ)
Non-identical twins that share 50% of their genes.
Define Concordance rate
Concordance is the extent to which both twins have the same characteristic.
Define Genotype
An individual’s genetic make up. The genotype dictates characteristics such as eye colour and hair colour.
Define Phenotype
The product of what happens when the individuals genotype interacts with the environment.
Define Evolution
The change in inherited characteristics over successive generations. Believed that certain behaviours are passed on through generations.
Define Natural selection
Linked to the survival of the fittest. Those individuals who posses “desirable” characteristics/behaviour are more likely to survive and reproduce.
Define Neurochemistry
Chemicals in the brain/body that affect behaviour, including neurotransmitters and hormones.
Name 2 Hormones
Testosterone and Adrenaline
Name 2 Neurotransmitters
Serotonin and Dopamine
