phallic stage= boy develops unconscious desires for his mother, sees his father as a rival, however fearing power of father and fear of castration , he represses these feelings

-sees mother as rival for fathers affection ,also believes she once had a penis but lost it due to mother, desire for penis, symbolising male power, called penis envy
- girl then accepts she will never have a penis, redirects this to desire to have a baby
resolve = gives up desire for father, fears los of mothers love, then identifies with mum, adopts her attitudes/values=. internalisation
