Key assumptions
The unconscious of which we are unaware of determines our behaviour , personality has three parts and early childhood experience determine adults behaviours
Conscious, pre conscious and unconscious
Conscious- small amount of mental activity we know about (environment)
Pre-conscious- things we can become aware of if we wanted ( memories )
Unconscious- things we are unaware of and can’t become aware of (biological drive (sex) )
Id, ego and super ego
Id - instant gratification
Ego - delayed gratification
Super ego - right thing/moral decisions and developed later in life
Defence mechanisms
Repression - forcing a distressing or threatening memories (trauma)
Denial - failing or refusing to acknowledge some aspect of reality
Displacement- transferring feelings from the true object of anxiety onto a substitue tragedy - slamming a door
Psychosexual development
Oral - 0-1years Anal - 1-3years Phalic- 3-5/6years Latent- 6-11 years Genital - 12+
