Conformity definition
A process for when a person changes their beliefs, attitudes, actions or perception to closely match those held by a group that they belong to or want to belong to or gain desired approval from a group.
What influences conformity?
Larger group sizes
Social norms
Group think - Group unanimity over rules individuals realistic approvals of consequence
Group shift - Condition in which the influence of a group causes an individual to adopt a more extreme position (Influential group = more likely to change thought & behavior)
Deindividuation - Tendency for individuals to lose sense of identity & individuality within a group.
Collectivist culture vs Individualist
Collectivist - Community that prioritizes group over individual - conformity is higher
Individualist - Community that prioritizes individual over group - conformity is less
How is prejudice and discrimination different from eachother?
Prejudice refers to biased thinking, whereas discrimination is the action against a group.
Stanford prison experiment
a two-week simulation of a prison
environment that examined the effects of situational variables on participants’ reactions and behaviors.
AIM - To see how situational variables effect participants reactions and behavior.
Ethical guidelines breached - protection from harm, informed consent, right to withdraw, deception & debriefing

24% Did not conform at any point
