Mind
How is the brain different from the mind?
Brain: physical, tangible, thing you can change
Mind: what the brain gives rise to the mind
What does the body give us?
5 senses
What is the difference between the old brain and the new brain
Old brain: the basement, instinctive, impulsive, reactive, emotional
New brain: the lobes, logical, planning, considering consequences and alternatives
Which brain evolved earlier?
Old brain
charts the electrical impulses in the brain
EEG
uses radioactive glucose to see the active parts of the brain
PET scan
uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves to produce an image of the brain
MRI
produces a moving image of which parts of the brain that are getting the most blood
FMRI
What is human behavior a result of?
constant back-and-forth tug-of-war between the OLD BRAIN and the NEW BRAIN
What is the cerebral cortex?
- The newer part of the brain
- Features many folds/crevices, giving the brain more surface area
Why does the brain have folds and crevices ?
Information processing
controls movement, more space devoted to fingers, hands, face(bc they are precision movements)
Motor Cortex
controls hearing, in temporal lobe
Auditory cortex
controls vision, occipital lobe
