Chemsitry Test 12 Flashcards
Solid or gas substance being dissolved
Solute
Substance doing the dissolving
Solvent
Two liquids which will mix with each other in any proportion
Miscible
2 liquids which will not mix with each other in any proportion
Immiscrible
What does “Like dissolve like” refer too?
Refers to polarity with polar and non-polar
- true solution
- solute particles very small
- does not separate on standing
- light passes through
- cannot be filtered
Homogeneous
- suspensions
- not uniform throughout
- partied are large
- may settle on standing
- light does not pass through
- can separate when filtered
Heterogeneous
Homogeneous mixture of 2 or more substance in a single phase
Solutions
Substance that dissolves into ions in solution
Electrolytes
Substance that dissolves in a solution but does not produce ions
Non-electrolytes
What are the factors affecting the Rate of Dissolution?
- Surface Area
- Agitation
- Temperature of Solvent
Maximum quantity of solute that will dissolve in a solvent
Solubility of Solids
- Solvent holding the maximum possible for a given temperature
- can tell a solution is saturated when solute particles are visible on the bottom
Saturated
Holding less solute than normally possible for the temperature
Unsaturated
- holding more solute than normally possible for the given temperature
- involves saturating the solution at high temperature than allowing to cool undisputed
Supersaturated
